Before you start using PowerPoint 2010 rich features, it's good to familiarize yourself with the PowerPoint 2010 screen elements.

This is because you will have occasion to use all of these screen elements at one time or another, so identifying them early on in your PowerPoint 2010 venture will make you more proficient in the long run.
PowerPoint 2010 uses a central ribbon of tools that you access on various tabs. The tools on the tabs are broken into groups. Some tools on the ribbon display drop-down galleries of selections for easy access, and others open dialog boxes for making detailed settings.

To help you understand more, following explains the important parts of the PowerPoint 2010 screen elements:
  • Ribbon - Across the top of the screen that contains commands organized in three components: tabs, groups, and commands. Here are the details on PowerPoint 2010 ribbon.
  • The File tab - The first tab on the Ribbon. You can click it to switch the program into a special mode called Backstage View, which provides access to various PowerPoint functions.
  • Quick Access toolbar (QAT) - Lets you place your favorite tools in one location and access functions that aren't offered through the ribbon. It contains the buttons that perform common actions, such as saving a document, undoing your last action, or repeating your last action.
  • Slides and Outline tab - The Slides tab shows thumbnail icons of your slides, and the Outline tab shows your presentation arranged as an outline. You can switch between the two tabs by clicking the tab you want to view.
  • Status bar - Tells you the slide that is currently displayed (for example, Slide 5 of 20). You can configure the status bar by right-clicking anywhere on it.
  • Current slide - The area where you type and create your presentation.
  • Notes pane - Located beneath the slide, which you can use to add notes to your slides.
  • Zoom control - PowerPoint automatically adjusts its zoom factor so that Slide View displays each slide in its entirety. You can change the size of your slide by dragging the zoom control slider.
